[* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=14) These components are composed of even smaller components, and this decomposition approach helps me with connectivity between ideas, assists in reusability—as with Lego blocks—and helps me find unexpected connections. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=25) If I open this, then it’s probably easier to understand what I mean by all of this. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=29) If you look at this page, you will see that it consists of individual ideas—each of these items I’m clicking on serves as a unit of thought. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=37) For example, if I click on this icon, you will see that this is actually a drawing with icons and text. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=40) If I click on one of the icons, then you will see that this icon has a proper name: it’s the Communication Alignment Networking Collaboration icon. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=72) First, we need to install a script. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=75) You can install the script using the "Install or Update Excalidraw Script." [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=78) I right-clicked on the tab and that’s how I brought this up, but also, if you press Ctrl (or Command) + P and type in "Install" in the command palette, you will find "Install or Update Excalidraw Scripts" this way as well. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=81) If I open this window, you see this long list of scripts available. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=84) We are now going to look at the "Compose Selected Elements into New Drawing" script, and all you need to do is click here to install the script. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=87) You will see a message pop up indicating that the script was installed, so we are now ready to go. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=90) To illustrate the idea, let me create a simple drawing. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=93) I’m going to include a couple of icons here; maybe I’ll include this light bulb. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=96) I’m going to make this slightly smaller, and then I’m including possibly a hand washing icon. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=99) This is going to be a very simple idea: hand washing helps you stay healthy. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=102) On the same drawing, I might add some other icons as well, like including this surgeon as an idea, along with other boxes or arrows. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=105) The exact document I’m creating right now isn’t crucial, but imagine that you recognize this thought—"hand washing helps you stay healthy"—as something you want to reuse somewhere else. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=108) This thought represents a unit of idea that you want to use. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=111) So what do you do? You can create a new drawing. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=114) You can make this an Excalidraw drawing; you can select all these items, click "Copy," and then paste those new items into another drawing. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=117) You can rename this and call this your idea, but after that, you would have to delete the elements from the original drawing and instead insert an image to represent the idea. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=120) You could place the idea in the original drawing, which is doable, but it takes a lot of clicks. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=123) So instead, with the new script, this is the "Decompose Selected Elements into New Drawing" function. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=126) If I select these elements and click the pizza slice, I’ll be prompted for a file name. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=129) The idea will be my file name, but you can give it any descriptive name. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=132) I typically like to provide my drawings with very descriptive titles, as it helps me resurface the image. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=135) I'm just going to give this name, and immediately, a new pane will open with this element. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=138) If I come back here, this is no longer composed of individual elements; instead, it is now represented as an image. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=141) The script took these elements, created a new drawing with the name I just provided, and saved it in the same folder. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=144) If I open the Excalidraw folder, then this is my drawing, which contains the idea I just created and it’s embedded right here. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=147) Now, if for example, I were to change this drawing and reshuffle the light bulb and hand, the updates would reflect immediately. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=150) So now the light bulb would be on the left, and if I return to the original document, Excalidraw will update in a second, and you can see that my light bulb is now right here. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=153) I think this is a very powerful tool if you want to handle composition as I explained earlier in this diagram. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=156) If you want to create documents where your big triangle represents the overall document, which consists of individual visual ideas, and those visual ideas are composed of even more atomic ideas, then this script can greatly facilitate that process. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=159) Usually, these units of ideas are created from large drawings on a whiteboard, where you start to draw and think about your ideas and then want to extract parts of that drawing to form your atomic ideas. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=162) We can also work further, so if I want to take now part of this image again and execute the decompose function, I could name it the "Light Bulb and Hand Idea." [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=165) You can see here that the "Light Bulb and Hand" drawing is associated with the idea drawing, which is part of my larger drawing. [* ](https://youtu.be/HRtaaD34Zzg?t=168) If I return to the light bulb and hand and, for example, draw a line around it, you’ll see the updates reflected: that line will appear in the idea and in my original drawing.
