They draw a parallel between the rumination process in animals and the importance of processing information slowly and effectively in our digital age, especially when dealing with complex topics like rationality. By utilizing various tools like Obsidian and Excalidraw, the speaker emphasizes the significance of digesting information for better understanding and retention. # Key Takeaways - The visual thinking process involves reading, processing, and embedding knowledge into permanent notes using tools like Obsidian and Excalidraw. - Rumination, akin to how cows digest their food, is crucial for properly understanding complex information, highlighting the need for time and space in our learning. - The concepts of epistemic and instrumental rationality are essential for understanding the distinction between forming true beliefs and systematically achieving our values. # Content Hey everyone, cohort three of the visual thinking workshop concluded yesterday [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=0) and this gave me an opportunity to reflect on my visual thinking workflow and think about reasons why you might want to consider cohort four [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=5). As I was thinking about this, this image of a grazing animal ruminating came to mind, and I thought that this was a particularly good parallel to how the visual thinking workflow works [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=10). I'm not going to make this into a biology class; also, I couldn't because I learned biology about 35 years ago [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=33). That's what I'm living from even today in terms of knowledge [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=39). My understanding is that the plants that cows eat are really hard to digest, and that's why they have this neat digestive system where they first eat the grass, it goes into their first belly, there it's pre-processed by enzymes and bacteria, and then they regurgitate this pre-processed food [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=47). They chew on it, this is called rumination, and then they're able to digest the food completely [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=72). I thought this was very similar to my process of reading a book, importing it into Obsidian, then using various visual tools to look at the material, put together the book on a page so that in the end, I'm able to embed the knowledge that I've taken from the book into my permanent notes and into various materials that I publish on the internet [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=90). Today we live in a world where information overload is a real challenge, and it's not only a biological issue but also a cognitive one [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=105). We're bombarded with information every day, which makes it extremely hard to properly digest the information that we consume [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=111). The visual thinking workshop goes through this six-week process of reading a book, processing that book, creating a book on a page, and then creating permanent notes and presenting the material [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=135). New insights come when I observe a cow ruminating; it's not running around but quietly sitting there for hours, just chewing the food slowly [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=169). This mirrors how we should process information—taking it in and allowing it time to settle in [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=180). Creating space for processing this information is essential, and for me, drawing atomic visuals in Excalidraw and creating links in Obsidian represents this rumination process [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=205). This is the antithesis of today's productivity fetish. There is a misconception that speeding through tasks and being highly efficient creates more value [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=219). In reality, this emphasis on productivity can hinder our understanding of why certain processes matter [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=259). I acknowledge that the workflow might appear long and complicated, but rumination and processing genuinely require time [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=286). In the workshop, we read a complex book titled "Rationality" by Eliezer Yudkowsky, which presented many challenging concepts right from the start [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=293). I initially had difficulty understanding some of the terminology; it was filled with concepts that felt foreign to me [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=310). To aid my understanding, I decided to create a concept map while reading the first chapter for the second or third time, which significantly helped clarify the ideas presented in the book [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=327). This concept map revolved around the definition of rationality and the distinction between epistemic rationality and instrumental rationality [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=345). If you're interested, feel free to pause the video to take a look at that concept map [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=360). I want to emphasize how creating visual representations during the reading process can aid in grasping the content and concepts discussed throughout the book [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=376). After reading the book, I utilized Readwise to import my highlights into Obsidian [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=385). My first activity was to compile literature note highlights, following the process of progressive summarization by Thiago Forte [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=399). My literature notes included the highlights I made while reading [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=414). As I completed my literature highlights, the next part of my process was to create atomic visuals for each chapter, which allowed me to re-chew the material from different angles [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=427). For instance, I created visuals revolving around the reasons behind seeking truth: curiosity, utility for achieving a goal, or nobility due to external expectations [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=431). Despite my highlights and visuals, I still sought external assistance when processing the material because it was a dense book [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=484). I used ChatGPT to summarize each chapter and recommend icons [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=488). The good news about this book is that it's available online as it consists of blog posts by Eliezer Yudkowsky, which can be found on LessWrong [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=505). I provided ChatGPT with the text from each chapter, reducing the risk of potential hallucinations by the model [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=521). For each chapter, I generated visual prompts to use with a stable diffusion algorithm and looked for each chapter's essence [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=586). These visual prompts were then imported into Excalidraw, where I added text to represent the ideas reflected in the images [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=620). I also rewrote the summaries generated by ChatGPT and organized them with the MidJourney-generated images [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=646). I created a flowchart-style map of the book, detailing each chapter and the relationship between them [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=671). The flowchart helped me understand the logic of the book, guiding me from the question of why truth down to the unique feature that humans can identify flaws in their thinking [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=688). There were also blockers identified, such as semantic stop signs that hinder our understanding [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=727). I created permanent notes, encapsulating key ideas about different biases covered in the book [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=779). These included the availability bias, the conjunction fallacy, and the planning fallacy [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=803). As part of the learning process, I summarized my key takeaways from the book, alluding to biases, floating beliefs, and the nature of evidence [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=871). As we conclude, I would recommend joining cohort four, where we'll explore more visual tools and their applications for information digestion [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1020). We aim to improve how we absorb and process complex information through this workshop [* ](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1049). Thank you! [each of the chapters so this time I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=554) [could avoid chai GPT hallucinating](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=556) [because I provided the text from the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=559) [chapter that I copied from Les strong](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=563) [and chapter by chapter I created this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=566) [pre-processed summary](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=569) [and then taking this summary](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=571) [I created this note in obsidian where I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=574) [simply took each of the chapter titles](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=579) [use the image prompt recommended by jgbt](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=581) [fed it into](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=586) [mid-journey I also created some](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=588) [preference settings in my journey so the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=591) [images look similar so I selected couple](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=594) [of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=597) [artists and color scheme so in the end](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=598) [these images follow a similar look and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=601) [feel so you can see that these images](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=605) [sort of look similar and as I went](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=608) [through this process at a later step](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=612) [those images where you see they have a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=614) [white border those I imported into](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=618) [excalator and added a bit of text around](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=620) [them to represent the idea they reflect](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=624) [and so this way I went through the book](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=629) [and you can see that in some cases I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=632) [added text in other cases not but so](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=635) [this was my next step in terms of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=637) [creating generated images or visuals for](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=641) [the book](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=645) [and from here](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=646) [I also created a summary I took the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=648) [summaries by China GPT and I rewrote](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=653) [those summaries to some extent and I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=657) [still had my mid-journey generated](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=660) [images right here but also I created](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=663) [this map of the book that helped me](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=667) [understand what's going on so in this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=671) [case you can see I took the chapter](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=673) [titles from the book and I organized it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=676) [into sort of a flowchart story to make](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=679) [sense of what's happening I can see that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=684) [I start with the question of why truth](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=687) [and then the definition of what](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=689) [rationality means and then I go into](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=692) [this process of our special feature as](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=696) [humans is that we have lens that sees](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=700) [its own flaws we are able to spot](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=704) [issues or errors in our thinking so this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=707) [is where the whole discussion about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=711) [biases and fake beliefs and evidence](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=714) [comes into the picture and there are](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=717) [also some blockers to this process such](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=720) [as the semantics stop signs and using](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=724) [science as a curiosity stopper I'm going](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=727) [to talk about these a bit later creating](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=730) [this summary helped me really](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=733) [conceptualize the logic of what Eleazar](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=736) [was covering in these 45 chapters that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=739) [are part of book one rationality and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=744) [from here I did two things one I created](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=748) [a book on a page so this is my book on a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=752) [page for this book and I'm going to dive](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=756) [in to the book on a page and walk you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=759) [through the book on a page at the end of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=762) [this video so I don't bore you with it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=764) [if you don't want to watch my summary](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=766) [but so this is the book on a page at a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=769) [glance that I created as well as I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=772) [stored important notes in my permanent](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=776) [notes in obsidian and so you can see](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=779) [here that for example I created a number](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=782) [of permanent notes about the different](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=786) [biases covered and so the way this looks](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=788) [is I have so these are all just embedded](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=791) [items so here in this case](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=795) [so this is the availability bias in my](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=799) [central custom folder and this is just](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=803) [the idea section of it so I can show you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=806) [how this all looks but you can see here](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=810) [that I have couple of biases as](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=813) [permanent notes I have the availability](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=816) [bias I have the conjunction fallacy as](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=819) [well as the illusion of transparency](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=822) [when you feel that you've explained](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=825) [something but the other side really](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=828) [doesn't understand what you've explained](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=830) [as well as the planning fallacy which is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=833) [this fallacy that we systematically](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=836) [underestimate the amount of time](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=840) [required to get anything done as well as](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=843) [the confirmation bias which is about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=846) [looking for evidence that supports our](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=849) [thinking instead of looking for evidence](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=852) [that would disconfirm our thinking](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=855) [these were some of the permanent notes](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=859) [that I took away from the book and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=861) [as the end of the process I actually](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=865) [created a couple of summary notes so](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=869) [these were the key takeaways for me from](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=871) [the book and when we go through the book](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=874) [on a page summary at the end](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=876) [I will dive slightly deeper into these](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=879) [first of all that neutrality is a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=883) [definite judgment I absolutely hate to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=886) [think about politics and I feel I'm](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=889) [neutral in the process but actually by](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=892) [not taking sides I am automatically](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=896) [taking a side and so that was an](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=898) [interesting thing that I still need to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=901) [think about how what I'm going to do](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=903) [with it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=905) [I noticed that we use the word](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=906) [productivity on Twitter and on the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=909) [internet pretty much everywhere as an](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=912) [Applause sign so productivity is a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=915) [sacred word that we need to say and then](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=919) [people are going to be happy and they're](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=921) [going to click on the video they're](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=923) [going to read the post and everyone is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=925) [after](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=928) [productivity without really](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=929) [understanding what's behind it or why](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=931) [this idea of floating beliefs was very](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=934) [interesting so floating beliefs are the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=938) [belief systems that we believe just](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=941) [because so we cannot really ground those](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=944) [beliefs there are some stop signs when](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=947) [we stop asking further questions and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=950) [these are the semantics stop signs and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=953) [then there's this point about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=956) [how you can use evidence which I think](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=958) [is super interesting I never thought of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=961) [it this way that you can always seek](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=963) [evidence to test a theory but you can](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=966) [never confirm it so confirmation and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=969) [knowing that in all the tests so far it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=973) [didn't fail is two different things and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=975) [then finally using scientific words](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=979) [without understanding it is a bit like](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=982) [believing in Magic because you use the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=985) [word that it is because of this and this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=988) [scientific fact you really have no idea](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=992) [why it is you don't understand it but](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=995) [still you appear to be intelligent by](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=998) [using the word greenhouse gas emissions](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1001) [in a sentence even though you really](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1003) [have no idea what that means and how it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1006) [works together I could look for a less](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1010) [controversial topic as well but I hope](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1012) [you get the idea so if you want to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1014) started](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1104) [so the book is centered around this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1108) [question of seeking Truth for reasons of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1113) [curiosity utility or nobility and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1116) [defines truth as an accurate map or](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1120) [actually](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1125) [rationality is about forming true](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1125) [beliefs and making winning decisions so](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1129) [rationality has this epistemic](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1132) [rationality which is about building](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1135) [accurate maps by systematically](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1138) [improving our beliefs and it's about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1141) [instrumental rationality which is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1145) [systematically achieving our values and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1148) [ranking actions that will achieve a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1151) [desired outcomes](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1155) [and so the special feature that us](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1158) [humans have is that we are able to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1161) [correct ourselves so we have lands or](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1164) [eyes that can see its own flaws there](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1167) [are many factors that can hinder our](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1171) [ability to build accurate Maps so let's](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1173) [look at some of these factors](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1176) [so first of all there are some biases](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1178) [the biases are certain kind of obstacles](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1181) [to our goal of obtaining truth of course](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1185) [the truth is a very narrow Target that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1189) [we want to shoot to and the bias is an](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1193) [obstacle that's produced by the shape of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1197) [our mental Machinery so typically even](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1200) [if you know about your biases it is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1203) [going to be extremely hard to correct](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1206) [them because you will still naturally do](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1208) [it because that's the way you're built](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1211) [so let's look at some of these biases](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1214) [first of all the illusion of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1217) [transparency when you feel that you've](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1219) [explained yourself perfectly and the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1222) [other party has no clue what you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1225) [mentioned the availability bias is about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1227) [giving things that occurred in the near](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1231) [past a higher ranking in this case what](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1235) [you see on picture is the is a flood and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1238) [typically people will not make flood](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1243) [insurance if they're in a flood zone but](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1247) [the flood not has happened for the here is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1396) [anticipation and proof this is about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1399) [anticipating](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1403) [outcomes and it's easy interesting that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1405) [there it is difficult to believe a thing](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1408) [it is often much easier to believe that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1411) [you ought to believe it with this you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1414) [start to form these floating beliefs](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1417) who](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1452) [believes that there's a dragon in the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1455) [garage of course knows what's what to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1457) there's this other](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1475) [similar story in the book what happens](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1478) [if a tree falls in the woods and [and this is about words that we say not](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1508) [because we understand it or that we it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1511) [really has additional meaning in the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1515) [sentence but because we want to gain the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1517) [approval of the crowd that we are](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1521) [talking to so for example often liberal](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1523) [democracy is used in this context we](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1526) [need to say it because that's how we get](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1530) [appreciation from the crowd](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1533) [and finally there's this topic of belief](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1536) [as an attire so when we stop](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1541) [anticipating as if our religion is true](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1543) [we will go to Great Lengths to convince](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1546) [ourselves we are passionate and this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1549) [desperation can be mistaken for passion](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1552) [the thinking that Eleazar puts around it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1555) [is however it is very easy to genuinely](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1558) [and passionately belong to a group and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1562) [to cheer for your favorite sports team](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1566) [and this is how Eleazar](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1568) [conceptualizes people belonging to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1571) [religious groups than in their heart](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1574) [they really cannot believe the religion](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1577) [they are believing](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1579) [but they for them the group they belong](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1581) [to is so much important](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1584) [and then the other topic here under fake](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1589) [beliefs is needing to get off the fence](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1593) [so the two topics here is one is that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1596) [neutrality is a definite judgment and I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1600) [think this quote is super powerful so](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1604) [if you try to stay neutral in a conflict](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1608) [then there's a conflict between a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1612) [powerful and the power less then you're](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1614) [really siding with the powerful and the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1617) [picture here is of an example where the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1620) [school principal goes to the children on](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1623) [the playground who are fighting and says](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1626) [it doesn't matter who started the fight](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1629) [stop it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1631) [but of course it matters who started the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1633) [fight only the principal doesn't want to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1635) [spend time on it but in the end someone](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1638) [is bullying the other and it really](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1641) [matters who started the fight so this is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1643) [the conflict here trying to demonstrate](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1646) [how neutrality is a definite judgment](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1649) [the other topic here is that there's a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1652) [notion that religions are not](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1655) [disprovable because they're in a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1658) [separate domain than science a liaiser](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1661) [points out that for example in the Bible](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1664) [Elijah did this scientific experiment so](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1667) [this is Elijah and the priests of ball](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1672) [you can look this up in the Bible and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1675) [read it it's just an example of a](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1678) [scientific experiment to prove that God](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1682) [exists in the Old Testament but in](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1685) [today's world with all the tools we have](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1689) [in terms of validating statements this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1692) [type of experimentation is no longer](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1696) [part of mainstream religion](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1698) [so these were about fake beliefs and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1702) [then where the discussion goes on to is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1705) [so how can you fight fake beliefs and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1708) [biases you can fight it by looking for](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1712) [evidence so if we talk about evidence](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1716) [this is a super interesting thought here](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1720) [that evidence is an event that is linked](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1723) [by cause and effect to the thing you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1725) [want to know about so here the example](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1728) [you see is how do you know that your](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1730) [shoes are untied well](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1733) [there are photons coming from the Sun](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1737) [that will be that will bounce off from](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1739) [your shoelaces which will hit your](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1743) [retina and then through neurons it will](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1746) [go to your visual cortex where you will](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1749) [form the idea that my shoelaces are](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1753) [untied so there is no real immediate](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1757) [connection between the event that you're](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1760) [thinking about and your thought about it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1763) [but there's this long chain and effect](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1766) [of cause and effect that leads you to](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1769) [think that your shoelaces are untied](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1772) [there are four different types of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1775) [evidences actually Eliezer mentions](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1778) [three and then later on he mentions](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1781) [historical evidence because he argues](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1783) [that the historical evidence is similar](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1786) [to how your shoelaces are registered](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1789) [only the cause and effect chain is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1792) [different because it is not that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1795) [physical round but it's more the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1797) [historical round but still historical](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1799) [evidence can be interesting anyway](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1801) [there's rational evidence which is based](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1804) [on probabilities there's historical](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1807) [evidence there's legal evidence that of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1810) [course follows the court rules and then](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1813) [there's scientific evidence which must](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1816) [be reproducible](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1819) [and so here there are two different big](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1821) [topics that we are going to look at](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1823) [first about evaluating evidence and here](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1825) [the core message is you should always](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1829) [prefer the simplest act explanation that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1833) [fits the facts also always keep your](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1836) [eyes open to notice when your model does](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1840) [not fit the data always look for this](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1844) [confirming data as you're doing](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1848) [experiments](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1850) [and so there are three topics here I](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1852) [want to highlight one is about](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1855) [confirmation bias the importance of](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1857) [writing down the experimental](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1860) [predictions before doing the experiment](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1863) [because otherwise confirmation bias will](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1866) [lead to false evaluation of the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1869) [experiment](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1873) [second that if you have a hypothesis](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1874) [that forbids nothing and therefore](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1877) [permits everything then it will not](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1880) [constrain your anticipation so this is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1883) [about many of the magical explanation](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1886) [like the law of attraction that really](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1889) [doesn't prove any anything and therefore](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1892) [because it doesn't forbid anything](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1895) [therefore it's not going to help you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1897) [with constraining what to anticipate as](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1899) [an outcome](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1903) [and finally there's Occam's razor which](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1904) [talks about this idea that the more](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1908) [complex an explanation is the more](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1911) [evidence you will need to justify it](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1915) [therefore the simpler the explanation](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1918) [the more likely it is to be true but](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1922) [then there is this whole discussion](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1925) [about the lady at the end of the road is](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1927) [a witch because she does things that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1930) [David would do is the simplest](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1933) [explanation but still not correct so you](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1936) [need to be careful on how you interpret](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1939) [or misinterpret Occam's razor](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1943) [and then there's a set of blockers that](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1947) [you need to pay attention to the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1950) [fundamental question you should be](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1953) [asking yourself is how much of the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1955) [knowledge I use every day would I be](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1958) [able to regenerate from Deep deletion](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1960) [and so there are five topics here first](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1965) [of all there are some words from the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1968) [past Elan vital and flagiston but in](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1971) [more recent time the word emergence](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1975) [these are magical words where we don't](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1979) [really understand how the process works](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1983) [and so liaiser Advocates that to worship](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1985) [a phenomenon because it seems so](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1989) [wonderfully mysterious is to worship our](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1992) [own ignorance](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1996) [then here's the image about using](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=1997) [scientific words as if it's a literally](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2001) [a genre people use scientific words](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2004) [without really understanding what their](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2007) [meaning is and this is false practice](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2010) [because you appear to be intelligent and](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2012) [well learned but in reality you don't](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2015) [understand the words you're using you're](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2018) [just regurgitating words that you were](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2020) [thought or that you heard in the news](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2024) [science is a curiosity stopper is the](https://youtu.be/yy4b6geeQSY?t=2028)
