By adding metadata to these images, the presenter enhances the organization and searchability of ideas within their vault. The demonstration showcases practical steps in managing visuals effectively for better knowledge management. # Key Takeaways - **Metadata Addition**: Including metadata with images improves organization and makes finding visual representations easier. - **Using Excalidraw**: Excalidraw allows for embedding images in a way that supports metadata, enhancing the visual representation of concepts. - **Navigation Benefits**: Linking visual elements to other notes in Obsidian facilitates seamless navigation and better contextual understanding. # Content Hey everyone, I was browsing the LYT conference agenda today. This is the conference organized by Nick Milo, and it’s happening this week. There was one session by Laura Evans Hill that captured my attention, and this is called "Atomic Visuals to Organize Your Ideas," which is going to be happening on Friday. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) As I was browsing Laura's Twitter feed, I noticed a couple of very interesting visual frameworks that she posted, and I started to add these to my vault. As I was doing this, I thought that this process of how I'm adding these images to my vault might be interesting to share with you, so that's what I'm going to do in this video. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) What I did is I added, first of all, the source so the Twitter feed from where I took this image from. If I click this, then, of course, the thread comes up, and I can see the different frameworks that she has posted. As well as I added some metadata so that now I can look at this image and navigate to Laura's page where I inserted the image, and I can navigate to the topic of the visual vocabulary, which is something I learned from "Verbal to Visual," a YouTube channel by Doug Neil. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) But coming back here, the point I want to show you is that I added some additional metadata to this drawing so that I can find it in my vault later on. If I open up this page in markdown view, then you can see that this drawing has additional metadata: it has the name of the author, Laura, as well as it mentions the parent node, visual vocabulary. I copied this summary from the tweet, which is very helpful because if I'm looking for a visual representation of a mindset shift or any of the other words mentioned here, then simply searching my vault, I'm going to be able to find this drawing. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) Let me show you how I inserted this image here, and as I said, I still have one more to go, so I'll walk you through the process. First of all, I'm inserting these images into an Excalidraw drawing, and the reason for that is because if I just pasted the PNG image, I'm not able to add metadata. The way I do it is I bring up the command palette with Ctrl + P, and then from the Excalidraw actions, I choose this action right here, "Create a new drawing in the current pane and embed into active document." This creates a blank drawing, which I'm going to change to light mode. I usually have these drawings in dark mode, but because these images have a bright background, I think light mode is going to be better in this case. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) Then I come to Twitter and look for the last framework, and this is the "Nine Abstract Frameworks to Visualize Ideas," I guess. So I'm going to rename this to "Nine Abstract Frameworks to Visualize Ideas" like this. I'm going to copy this image; I'm just simply going to copy the image and paste it right here. I'm going to then copy the source, so I'm going to copy the Twitter link, and I'm going to type here "source: Twitter," and here’s my link. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) Now, the reason I wrote "source" like this with two columns is because this now becomes a data view field. Let me show you, so if I open markdown view, then you can see that this text element is actually a data view field at the same time. I'm also going to add a couple more pieces of information to this page. I'm going to add the metadata tag, and this is the export X for X export; dark mode, I'm going to change this to false. Normally, my images are inserted if I'm in dark mode and dark, if I'm in light mode. This one I always want to insert into my documents in light mode, and I'm going to add some metadata here: the author, [Music]. Come on, the author, and that is Laura. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) I’m going to have a parent thought as well, and the parent thought is the visual vocabulary, like this. That’s about it. The thing to notice here is I added this metadata above the text elements section, so anything that is added above text elements, Excalidraw will not touch. You can add your metadata here; you can even add a short abstract, as I'm going to do in a second. You can add anything below the text elements section; Excalidraw will overwrite. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) Now let's add some additional metadata here, and the way I did this is I'm going to copy these items right here, like this. Come on, Ctrl + C, and I'm going to paste them in here. Unfortunately, these icons are slightly large, so I had to do this manual thing. It's interesting that it was not large in the case of all the tweets, so I'm not quite sure what's going on—why some are large and some are not—but it’s actually pretty simple to change the size by adding the pipe character and adding the size you want. I'm setting this to 50 because I think that is just large enough, 50 pixels, but that is up to you. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) In this case, it takes a little bit more time because I need to do this editing. In other cases, if I were not using these icons as well, it would be much simpler. But now that I have done this, then I can, for example—oops, I think my pyramid here is a next line, like this. If now I want to search for example for actionable steps, then you can see that Obsidian search will bring up this document. I can, of course, now, it's the same document; I can open this up, and I can find my drawing based on the content. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) Also, if I open up ExcaliBrain, then you can see that these "Nine Abstract Frameworks to Visualize Ideas" is now also linked to my visual vocabulary. So if I open up my thought or my note for the visual vocabulary, then I can see my different visual vocabulary items as well as all the other notes. If I open this page right here, then I can navigate back to Laura, and from Laura, I can find the session "Atomic Visuals to Organize Your Ideas," which was at the conference, and I can also see the date when it happened. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) So it’s all nicely linked into my documents. The image is not just simply a pasted PNG image, but it’s embedded into my vault, and it’s easy to find later on. I hope you found this quick demonstration helpful. I really enjoy navigating my documents using ExcaliBrain, and I find that adding such metadata increases the likelihood and the ease of finding this data later on. I think it may take a few minutes to add the additional metadata; on the other hand, I think it pays back many dividends because it is just so much easier to find data if it has the proper metadata. [* ](https://youtu.be/c4qLT5xUdh8) If you’re watching this before Friday, tomorrow, then I highly recommend you join the session with Laura. I think it’s going to be very interesting. Her tweets, her drawings, and the material that she’s been putting out are very inspiring and useful, so I’m pretty sure that tomorrow is going to be a great session. Thank you.
